Chet’s Camps in Grand Lake Stream

Two days before our arrival, Sue from Chet’s Camps called to see what we needed and what they could have ready for us.  How would we like the beds made up?  Did we need a pack n play? a highchair?  They were so accommodating and helpful – even before we left home, that we knew this would be a great trip.

Al and Sue Laplate own the camps and have been providing a place to people from all over the world to come and fish the lakes known for some of the world’s best landlocked salmon.

It was dreary during the whole six-hour drive up but it was better to be driving in the rain than having our plans ruined because of it.  By the time we got into the camp, the sun had started to come out and it was warming up.  And there were no bugs!

We unpacked and immediately went for a walk to stretch our legs and check the place out.  Al was coming back as we were walking so we stopped, chatted and made plans to go fishing the next morning.  I was excited to try my hand at fishing and hoped Al would be helpful in showing me some of the basics.

View from the cabin

There were signs of deer and Al mentioned that there were plenty of turkey around.  Robin and I had plans to go turkey hunting early one morning while we were there, so that was good to hear.

No one in my family had even been to Washington county before, at least not this area of it, so it was wonderful to be able to explore and see just how beautiful it is.  Maine is one of those states that have so many secret gems tucked away.

Visitors checking us out

We had sunshine, no internet, spotty phone service and smiles on our faces.  This was going to be a great trip!

It doesn’t get better than hunting on snow

There was a storm coming in on Thanksgiving night, so Dad and I started and ended our day in the woods.  It was silent when we walked into our stands in a turkey induced semi-stupor. The silence didn't last long.  For almost two hours, we listened to someone...
